Victim advocate: Jail escapee's girlfriend probably fears for her life

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC)-The victim's advocate for the Mt. Pleasant Police Department said Friday that the girlfriend of a man who escaped from the Berkeley County Detention Center on Thursday most likely fears for her life even though she has been taken into protective custody.

James Sanders, 39, was being held on criminal domestic violence charges when he escaped from the jail Thursday afternoon.

"First thing I thought about was where is the victim?" said victim's advocate Donna German. "I imagine she's in fear for her life because victims of domestic violence, it now only affects them physically, but they got a lot of mental problems."

German encourages domestic violence victims to get an order of protection from a judge. The order is in effect for a full year, and requires the abuser to stay away from the victim.

Live 5 Most Wanted fugitive captured following broadcast

MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC)-Authorities say they have captured a man wanted for shoplifting from several stores.

The Moncks Corner Police Department arrested 32-year-old Alexander Washington Jr. Thursday night. Investigators say a Live 5 News viewer saw a Most Wanted segment featuring Washington and immediately notified authorities.

Officers located Washington at a hotel in Moncks Corner.

Washington, who police call a career criminal, was wanted on a charge of petit larceny in connection with an incident that happened on Bradley Road on December 31, 2011.

"Basically he came to a man's house, asked to borrow some movies and while the man's getting the movies that he recorded he sees him grabbing his computer and going out the door with it," said Moncks Corner Police Lt. Michael Roach.

Police say it may be officially a petty crime, it's one of many Washington has committed over the years.
